The spending of cultural tourists in Florida amounted to $2.9 billion in 1997. This spending created $5.6 billion in gross state product, as well as more than 64,000 jobs, and $1.7 billion in wages.

In a 2005 publication of the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs titled "Culture Builds Florida's Future", then-Secretary of State Glenda Hood said in a letter that "the arts' annual statewide economic impact has grown from $1.7 billion in 1997 to over $2.9 billion.  In fact, in a 12-year period, the arts and cultural sector of our economy grew more than the state's economy as a whole."
